Can I get travel insurance if I have already left home?

Short answer: usually yes, and the internet is wrong about this. Of the 30 policies we have read line by line, 18 will start cover while you are already abroad, 3 will with conditions, and only 9 refuse outright. What changes is the waiting period before you are actually covered, and the age at which the door closes.

Most comparison sites assume you are sitting at home with a return ticket booked. Ask them about cover when you are already three months into a trip and they either refuse to quote or quietly hand you a policy that will not pay out. That is why forum advice on this is so consistently wrong: people are told they will not sell it to you once travel begins, which is simply not true of the specialists.

The catch is real but different from the myth. Insurers that sell to travellers already abroad protect themselves with a waiting period: a window after purchase during which you are not covered, so nobody buys a policy from a hospital waiting room. Below is who does what.

What insurers actually check when you buy late

If you are over 70 and already abroad

This is the hardest combination in travel insurance, and the one where the mainstream market gives up entirely. Globelink is the only UK and EU retail insurer in our database that will sell an already-travelling policy up to age 74. Above that, the realistic options are worldwide medical insurers rather than trip insurance: see our over-70 age ceilings page for who goes higher and what the benefit caps look like when they do.

Questions people actually ask

Yes. It is a normal product that several insurers sell deliberately, with dedicated already-abroad policies. What is not allowed is buying a standard pre-departure policy and telling the insurer you have not left yet: that is a misrepresentation and it will void the policy at claim time, which is exactly when you need it.
Because it is true of most mainstream comparison sites and high street brands, which is where most people look first. Their quote forms are built around a resident who has not yet departed. The insurers that do sell mid-trip cover are mostly specialists who never appear on those comparison sites.
It varies by insurer, from 24 hours to 14 days, and the table above lists each one. Some apply a shorter wait for accidents than for illness. A waiting period does not usually apply to a policy bought before you left.
Usually not. Once you have departed there is no longer a trip to cancel, so post-departure policies typically drop cancellation cover and focus on medical, evacuation and interruption. If cancellation matters to you, that has to be bought before you go.
