Travel insurance when you are an Australian already overseas
Australia's comparison sites are unusually honest about this: Compare the Market states on its own site that it does not currently offer quotes for travellers who are already overseas. That is the whole problem in one sentence. Here is who does.
Australian residents have a decent domestic market for pre-departure cover and a thin one for anything bought after take-off. The insurers below sell worldwide and do not require you to be standing in your home country when you buy. Note that Globelink, the strongest already-abroad option for UK and EU residents, is not available to Australians: it requires UK, EU or EEA residence.

The regulatory reason your options look strange
Australian financial services rules treat comparing products in a way that suggests one is better than another as financial advice, which requires a licence. That is why Australian comparison sites are cautious, why several international insurers simply do not market into Australia, and why the useful specialists can be hard to find from an Australian search result. We publish eligibility facts with sources rather than recommendations, and we do not target Australian visitors: check anything here directly with the insurer before you buy.
