Travel insurance when you are a UK resident already abroad

The big UK comparison sites are built for someone who has not left yet. Once you are out of the country their quote journeys either refuse you or hand you a policy whose small print quietly requires that your trip had not started. Here is what a UK or EU resident can actually buy from where they are standing.

Two things make the UK case distinctive. First, several UK brands require not just UK residence but ongoing UK residence, a UK GP and an NI number, which quietly rules out anyone who has been away too long. Second, the UK is one of the few markets with an insurer that will sell to travellers already abroad well into their seventies.

Which UK brands will not help once you have gone

Staysure, InsureandGo and CoverForYou are all UK-resident products that require purchase before departure. Staysure additionally requires that you have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for six of the last twelve months, with a local GP and an NI number. They are strong on medical screening and seniors before you travel, and no use to you once you have gone. Their pages are worth reading if your trip has not started yet.

Long stays and moving on

If you have been away long enough that you are no longer really a UK resident, the honest answer is that you are drifting out of travel insurance and into international health insurance. Genki and SafetyWing Complete are the two products in our database built for that reality, and neither requires a fixed country of residence in the way UK brands do. See travel insurance without a fixed country of residence.

Questions people actually ask

For insurance purposes, often not, and this is where policies get voided. Insurers set their own tests: some ask only that the UK is your permanent home, others require you to have been physically in the UK for six of the last twelve months, plus a UK GP and NI number. If you no longer meet the test, a UK-resident policy is the wrong product, however cheap the quote looks.
This is the most commonly suggested workaround on forums and it is a bad idea. If your permanent home is not that address, you are misrepresenting a material fact, and the policy can be voided at the point you claim. Buying the correct product from an insurer who accepts your actual circumstances costs less than an unpaid medical bill.
No. A GHIC gives access to state healthcare in the EU on the same basis as a local resident. It does not cover repatriation, private treatment, mountain rescue, or the cost of getting you home in a medical emergency, which is where the large bills sit.
