Travel insurance over 70, and where the ceilings really are

Age is the cleanest eligibility rule in insurance and the most quietly enforced. The popular travel policies stop at 69, and nobody tells you until the quote form does. Here is where each insurer's ceiling actually sits, and the far more important question of what you still get once you are over it.

There are two separate traps here. The first is the hard ceiling, the age at which an insurer will not sell to you at all. The second, and the one that costs people real money, is the benefit step-down: insurers who happily sell to an 82-year-old while quietly capping the medical limit at a fraction of what a younger traveller gets. A policy with a $10,000 overall limit is not meaningful cover for a serious hospital admission abroad.

If you are over 70 and already abroad

This is the narrowest gap in the whole market. Globelink will sell its Already Travelling policy up to age 74, with the extra condition that you have been away no more than six months if you are 66 or over. Above 74, mid-trip options thin out to worldwide medical products such as EKTA, which sells to age 100 but is underwritten by a Comoros-licensed carrier, a trade-off we flag on the card rather than bury.

Pre-existing conditions and the UK specialists

Most of the insurers above simply exclude pre-existing conditions rather than screening them. If you need conditions actually covered, the UK specialist market is a different and better answer: Staysure and InsureandGo have no upper age limit and screen conditions properly, though both require UK residence and purchase before you leave. In the UK you can also use the FCA-mandated signposting service: if an insurer cannot help because of a medical condition, they must point you to a directory of specialists, run by MoneyHelper and BIBA.

Questions people actually ask

It is an underwriting and pricing decision rather than a medical one. Claim frequency and average claim cost rise with age, and the popular nomad and backpacker products are priced for a young risk pool. Rather than price the older bracket properly, most simply decline it, which is why specialists exist.
Yes, and increasingly so past 75. UK market data for June 2026 put the average single-trip premium at around 26 pounds overall but over 100 pounds for the 75 to 79 bracket. That is the average across conditions and destinations, so treat it as a shape rather than a quote.
Often at a lower age ceiling than single trip, and with shorter maximum trip lengths. Globelink is a good illustration: around 89 on single trip but roughly 84 on annual. If you take several trips a year, check both ceilings rather than assuming the headline number applies to your product.
