SafetyWing vs Genki
These two get recommended interchangeably in nomad communities, and they are not interchangeable at all. One is a travel medical subscription with an American structure, the other is European health cover that happens to travel. The eligibility differences decide it more often than price does.

What the table means in practice
- Residence: Genki accepts any citizen with any residence and sells its Native product to people with no legal residence at all. SafetyWing Essential is broadly available too, but its Complete plan excludes residents of the US, Canada, Ireland and the UAE among others.
- Starting mid-trip: both allow it. Genki limits you to emergencies only for the first 14 days if you had no prior cover, which is a meaningful gap if you are buying while already away.
- Activities: Genki includes a long list as standard, including diving, climbing and motor vehicle operation. SafetyWing puts much of this behind its Adventure Sports add-on and requires it above 50cc.
- The USA: both treat it as expensive and special. Genki gives you seven days per US stay for emergencies unless you upgrade; SafetyWing sells a US add-on to non-US residents.
- Neither covers cancellation or baggage. These are health-first products. If you want your trip costs protected, you need a separate trip policy.
Which one for which person
If you have genuinely left your home country behind, want ordinary healthcare rather than emergency-only cover, and expect to keep going for years, Genki's structure is built for that. If you want a simple rolling travel medical policy, occasional trips home, and a US add-on when you need it, SafetyWing's is. Both pay us a commission if you buy through our links, and both would still sit exactly where they sit in the table if they did not.
